Industeel, a subsidiary of ArcelorMittal Downstream Solutions, has initiated the construction of a vertical continuous casting machine (CCM) at its facility in Le Creusot, France. The investment in this project totals €52 million, as reported by Kallanish.
Upon completion, the new unit will enable Industeel to diversify its product range with lightweight slabs measuring up to 35 cm in thickness. These slabs, fabricated from carbon, stainless steel, and nickel-based alloys, will cater to various sectors, including clean energy and the automotive industry.
Initially, the CCM will have the capacity to produce 30 thousand tonnes of slabs annually, with plans to scale it up to 50 thousand tonnes per year. The implementation of this new technology is expected to reduce energy consumption, lower CO2 emissions by 10% annually, reduce rolling costs and streamline the overall production process.
The equipment for the CCM will be provided by the Italian company Danieli, renowned for its technological expertise in the steel industry. The commissioning of the CCM is scheduled for May 2025, featuring a comprehensive range of Danieli 3Q technology packages.
This initiative follows Danieli's previous modernisation of an Industeel slab machine at the Charleroi plant in Belgium in 2017. Additionally, Danieli has observed a significant demand for electric arc furnaces in the global market, with a backlog of orders extending for several years.
