India is stepping up its green steel agenda as the government pushes for cleaner, lower-emission steel production in line with its long-term net-zero goals. The Ministry of Steel has introduced a Green Steel Taxonomy and released a roadmap to guide the sector toward more sustainable manufacturing practices. The effort also builds on the 2019 Steel Scrap Recycling Policy, which supports better ferrous scrap use across the value chain. At the same time, pilot projects using hydrogen in steelmaking are beginning to shape the next phase of decarbonisation. The broader push reflects India’s intent to modernise steel production, improve resource efficiency and cut carbon intensity while keeping the sector globally competitive.
