In April 2024, global pig iron output declined 6.9% to 114.62 million tonnes (MT) from same month in 2023. Using data from the World Steel Association, the percentage fell by 3.1% from March.
Global pig iron output by the blast furnace process was 105.27 MT for the month (-5.8% year on year), while the direct reduction method produced 9.35 MT (-10.6% year on year).
From January to April 2024, global pig iron production fell by 2.4% to 460.57 million tonnes, compared to the same period in 2023. Specifically, the blast furnace process generated 423.13 MT of pig iron, while the direct reduction method produced 37.44 MT.
The largest pig iron-producing countries in January-April were China (284.99 MT), India (47.24 MT), Japan (20.42 MT), the Russian Federation (20.23 MT), and South Korea (14.43 MT).
2023 global pig iron production increased by 1.1% compared 2022 to 1.41 billion tonnes. In 2023, 1.29 billion tons were produced by the blast furnace method, and 120.15 MT by the direct reduction method.
