Chennai is set to get its first steel flyover at T Nagar by the end of September, officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) have confirmed. The ₹131-crore project, spanning 1.2 km, connects the ramp of the South Usman Road flyover to CIT Nagar 1st Main Road and extends up to CIT Nagar 4th Main Road.
With 96% of work completed, final tasks such as road laying, median painting, and signboard installation are under way. Lighting on both the new and old flyovers has already been completed. The inauguration is expected to be done by Chief Minister M K Stalin.
Unlike conventional concrete structures, the two-lane flyover is built on steel pillars and will feature entry and exit ramps near T Nagar bus terminus. Once open, it will link with the North Usman Road flyover, creating a continuous 2-km stretch from CIT Nagar to Panagal Park.
The project began in 2023 with an initial completion target of December 2024 but has been fast-tracked. Officials also confirmed that the Vadaperumbakkam bridge project, costing ₹22.41 crore, is now cleared for completion by October-end.
