In a decisive move aimed at bolstering India’s domestic steel output, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed central ministries and state governments to accelerate the extraction of iron ore from previously untouched greenfield mines. The announcement comes amidst global steel supply challenges and tariff uncertainties in key export markets.
Government officials revealed that the PM’s directive is part of a broader strategy to reduce import dependency and secure raw material supplies for the country’s growing infrastructure projects, including high-speed rail corridors, smart cities, and the expanding defence sector.
With India aiming to double its steel production capacity by 2030, the Steel Ministry has been asked to work in close coordination with the Ministry of Mines and state authorities to fast-track mine allotment processes, address environmental clearances, and resolve land acquisition hurdles.
Industry players have welcomed the announcement, viewing it as a timely intervention to ensure long-term raw material security and price stability in the domestic market.
