Boosts demand, stabilizes prices, and strengthens the steel industry.

The Indian government has introduced a new policy prioritizing the use of domestically produced iron and steel in public procurement contracts. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on imports, strengthen the domestic steel industry, and promote self-sufficiency in key infrastructure projects.

Under the revised guidelines, government agencies and public sector undertakings (PSUs) must prioritize locally manufactured steel when awarding contracts for infrastructure, defense, and other key sectors. The policy aligns with the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India) initiative, fostering growth in domestic manufacturing while ensuring quality compliance under Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) regulations.

The move is expected to benefit domestic steel producers by providing steady demand and price stability, especially amid global supply chain disruptions. However, industry experts suggest that clarity on procurement processes, pricing mechanisms, and quality benchmarks will be crucial for seamless implementation.

With the government ramping up infrastructure spending and defense modernization, the policy is seen as a strategic push for industrial growth and employment generation. Analysts predict that this decision will bolster India’s steel sector, enhance production capacity, and contribute to long-term economic resilience.
