In a strategic shift aimed at improving efficiency and reducing corrosion-related losses, Western Railway has begun transporting industrial salt using high-capacity steel wagons. This marks a significant upgrade from traditional BOXN wagons, which often suffered damage due to salt’s corrosive nature.
The new wagons, classified as BOSTHSN, are made entirely of stainless steel and designed specifically to handle bulk commodities like salt. Each rake can carry approximately 3,800 tonnes of salt in 58 wagons, boosting capacity and reducing maintenance costs.
This move enhances the safety and longevity of rail infrastructure while supporting the salt industry’s logistical needs. Western Railway initiated the first trial from Jamnagar, a major salt-producing hub, to Gandhidham. The initiative is part of Indian Railways’ broader push to modernize freight movement and adopt more durable, sustainable transport solutions.Steel manufacturers are likely to benefit from increased demand for corrosion-resistant wagons, and the salt industry will gain from lower transit losses. The development underscores a growing trend of material-specific solutions in railway logistics.
