✅ India exempted from 26% US tariffs, easing pressure on steel exporters
✅ Relief for MSMEs and manufacturers in value-added steel and aluminium
✅ Exemption stabilizes global trade confidence and preserves export volumes
India’s steel industry breathed a sigh of relief as the United States announced an exemption for Indian steel and aluminium exports from its newly imposed 25–26% tariffs. The exemption, confirmed in a revised White House document, provides crucial relief for Indian exporters, especially MSMEs and value-added manufacturers who faced the threat of margin pressure, reduced global competitiveness, and potential market exits.
The initial announcement of sweeping tariffs under Section 232 sparked fears of trade disruption and dumping from other countries. However, after diplomatic engagement and consideration of strategic trade ties, the US revised its policy to exclude India from the latest round of duties. This move is expected to stabilise India’s export momentum and restore confidence among stakeholders in the metal trade ecosystem.
Industry leaders welcomed the decision, calling it a “pragmatic course correction” that preserves bilateral trade flows and helps Indian manufacturers stay globally competitive.
