Mexican steel producer TYASA has launched the first phase of its Special Bar Quality (SBQ) steel project at its Veracruz complex, marking a major step in the company's expansion into high-value specialty steel products. The project is part of a broader investment program aimed at strengthening Mexico's domestic supply of specialized steel for advanced industrial applications.
The first phase adds approximately 400,000 tonnes of annual production capacity and enables the manufacture of round bars and hot-rolled flat bars designed for sectors such as automotive, oil and gas, energy, metalworking, and tool manufacturing. The expansion increases TYASA's total steelmaking capacity to around 1.6 million tonnes per year. The project forms part of a larger investment strategy valued at roughly $250 million, with additional processing, inspection, conditioning, cold-finishing, and heat-treatment facilities expected to become operational in subsequent phases. These upgrades will allow TYASA to produce higher-grade specialty steels and reduce dependence on imported products.
Industry observers view the expansion as a significant boost for Mexico's steel sector, supporting local manufacturing supply chains and enhancing the country's ability to serve demanding industrial markets. The move also reflects growing investment in value-added steel production across North America.
