Turkey’s slab imports declined sharply during the first five months of 2026 as purchases from major suppliers weakened, despite strong growth in shipments from Vietnam and Libya.Between January and May 2026, Turkey imported 1.27 million metric tonnes of slab, down 22.3% year on year. The total import value fell 25.3% to approximately $600.28 million.

Russia remained Turkey’s largest slab supplier with 698,059 tonnes, although shipments declined 23.7%. Imports from Malaysia dropped 50% to 204,344 tonnes, while Algerian supplies decreased 23.3% to 169,224 tonnes.

Vietnam recorded the strongest growth among established suppliers, nearly doubling shipments to 100,450 tonnes. Libya also emerged as a notable supplier, delivering 65,242 tonnes after recording no shipments during the corresponding period of 2025. Meanwhile, Turkey registered no slab imports from India. In May alone, imports reached 370,090 tonnes, rising 31.8% from April but falling 7.3% year on year. The figures indicate a gradual shift in Turkey’s slab sourcing landscape, although gains from emerging suppliers were insufficient to offset lower volumes from traditional partners.
