In a significant development under India's "Make in India" initiative, the Tata Group and European aerospace giant Airbus have joined forces to manufacture helicopters for civil use in India. Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), a subsidiary of the Tata Group, will collaboratively establish a final assembly line (FAL) in India for producing Airbus's best-selling H125 helicopters. This initiative marks a substantial achievement for the "Make in India" program, with deliveries of the first "Made in India" H125s expected to commence in 2026.

The FAL setup is projected to take 24 months, and its location will be jointly determined by Airbus and the Tata Group. This marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first instance of the private sector establishing a helicopter manufacturing facility in India. Additionally, it will be the second final assembly line that Airbus is building in India, following the "Make in India" C295 military aircraft manufacturing facility in Vadodara.

The announcement was made during the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to India as the chief guest for Republic Day celebrations. The FAL in India will integrate major component assemblies, avionics, mission systems, and various other components. It will also handle testing, qualification, and the delivery of the H125 helicopters to customers in India and the surrounding region.

Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury emphasised the significance of helicopters for nation-building and stated that a "made-in-India" civil helicopter would symbolise the confident New India and unlock the true potential of the helicopter market in the country.

N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, expressed delight in setting up India's first helicopter assembly facility in the private sector, highlighting its positive impact on passenger and goods transportation, emergency services, disaster management, law enforcement, tourism, and aerial work missions.

The H125 is renowned as the world's best-selling single-engine helicopter and is part of Airbus' Ecureuil family, known for its versatility and performance. This collaboration is part of Airbus' broader efforts to develop a comprehensive aerospace ecosystem in India, expanding its industrial footprint with various aerospace-related activities.
