Construction at SSAB’s new steel production facility in Luleå, Sweden, remains suspended after low levels of hydrogen cyanide were detected at the project site.Work was halted around two weeks ago as a safety precaution. SSAB is now preparing to restart construction, although the company has not announced a confirmed date for activities to resume.
Despite the temporary disruption, SSAB maintains that the suspension will not affect the project’s overall budget or planned completion schedule. The new Luleå steel plant represents an investment of approximately SEK 50 billion and is expected to begin operations by the end of 2029.
The project is central to SSAB’s long-term production transformation and Sweden’s transition towards lower-emission steelmaking. Once operational, the facility is expected to support more efficient steel production while strengthening SSAB’s position in the European green steel market.Industry stakeholders will closely monitor safety assessments and construction developments, as any prolonged delay could affect contractor schedules and equipment installation. For now, SSAB remains confident that the major industrial project will progress according to its original timeline.
