SAIL has reinforced India’s defence manufacturing push by supplying indigenous special steel for INS Taragiri, the latest stealth frigate commissioned into the Indian Navy. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the warship used the full requirement of nearly 4,000 tonnes of special-grade steel plates supplied by SAIL. The steel was produced at the company’s integrated plants in Bokaro, Bhilai and Rourkela, highlighting its strong metallurgical capability and role in strategic projects. The development also strengthens the broader Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat narrative, as domestically produced steel continues to support critical naval platforms. SAIL has already contributed steel to major defence assets such as INS Vikrant and other Project 17A warships, making INS Taragiri another milestone in India’s self-reliance journey. For the steel industry, this marks a strong example of how domestic producers are becoming central to high-value, mission-critical infrastructure and defence manufacturing.
