SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant has produced its first batch of special electrical steel, marking a portfolio upgrade into high-value flat products. The mill rolled about 1,100 tonnes of 0.5 mm thick Non-Grain Oriented (NGO) electrical steel, conforming to IS 18316 LS grade.
With uniform magnetic properties in all directions, NGO electrical steel enables efficient energy conversion and lower core losses, making it suitable for motors, pumps, compressors, small transformers, appliances and EV auxiliaries. The debut batch positions Bokaro to support growing domestic demand for energy-efficient equipment and indigenisation across white goods and mobility supply chains.
Plant officials said the development draws on process refinements in cold rolling and heat treatment to achieve the required mechanical and magnetic parameters. Follow-on heats and size variants are planned to build a regular product slate and qualify with OEM customers.
The milestone underscores SAIL’s push to expand value-added steels, diversify revenue and reduce imports in specialised segments, while strengthening linkages with downstream electrical and automotive manufacturers.
