Primetals Technologies has secured a contract to modernize a 5-strand bloom caster in eastern China, aiming to enhance the production of premium-quality steel grades for high-end industrial applications. The upgraded facility is expected to improve flexibility, productivity, and internal steel quality while supporting the growing demand for specialized steel products.
The modernization project includes the installation of a 200-ton withdrawal straightening unit (WSU), additional pinch rolls, and an optimized cooling system designed for precise soft reduction control. These advanced technologies will enable the production of high-quality blooms used in bearing steel, spring steel, bridge wire rope, tire wire, and cold-heading rivet applications.
Primetals Technologies stated that the upgraded caster will help the Chinese steel producer strengthen its position in the premium steel segment while improving operational efficiency and product consistency. The project reflects China’s continued investment in advanced steelmaking technologies and automation to meet rising industrial and infrastructure demand. Startup of the upgraded caster is scheduled for the end of 2026.
