New Delhi, April 24, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday emphasized that India’s steel industry must aim for zero imports and establish itself as a net exporter in the coming years. Addressing an industry conclave in New Delhi, PM Modi highlighted the sector’s pivotal role in building a self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat) and contributing to national infrastructure growth.
The Prime Minister urged both public and private sector companies to ramp up domestic production capacities, adopt sustainable manufacturing practices, and explore new global markets. “Indian steel should not only meet the demands of our nation but also make its mark on the world stage,” he stated.
He acknowledged the challenges posed by cheap steel imports, particularly from China, and stressed the need for strategic policy support, modernized plants, and innovation-led growth. The government is actively working on new trade regulations, scrap supply systems, and infrastructure pipelines to strengthen domestic producers.
The industry responded positively, with key players like Tata Steel, JSW Steel, and SAIL affirming their commitment to invest in capacity expansion and value-added product lines.
