Prime Minister Modi laid the groundwork for Tata-Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp's chip production facility in Dholera on March 13. He also opened the CG Power-Renesas outsourced assembly and testing (OSAT) facility in Sanand (Gujarat) and the Tata OSAT unit in Morigaon (Assam). All three units were virtually inaugurated.
The cabinet approved the three projects on February 29 of this year. "India is going to emerge as a major centre for producing semiconductors. The three sites will promote innovation and accelerate economic growth," stated Modi.
The three projects have a combined value of more than ₹1.25 lakh crore. The proposed investments include ₹91,000 crore for Tata-PSMC chip foundry, ₹27,000 crore for Tata OSAT facility, and ₹7,600 crore for CG Power-Renesas.
According to the government, these facilities will go a long way in boosting the semiconductor ecosystem in the country. They will also generate thousands of jobs in the semiconductor industry and catalyse employment generation in related sectors like electronics and telecom.
The three projects are expected to mark India’s entry into the domain of commercial chip fabrication units. Dholera will be the country's first commercial semiconductor fabrication facility. It may be noted here that the Modi government has made significant efforts lately to make India a global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technology development.
