Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal, has called upon the Indian steel sector to set its sights on achieving 1 billion tonnes of installed capacity in the long term. Speaking at a recent industry event in New Delhi, Goyal emphasized the importance of scaling up to meet the country’s growing infrastructure, automotive, and renewable energy demands.
The minister highlighted that India, already the second-largest steel producer globally, holds immense potential to expand its footprint both domestically and internationally. He encouraged steelmakers to invest aggressively in technology, green steel initiatives, and raw material security to achieve this ambitious capacity milestone.
Goyal also assured continued government support through policy stability, trade protections against unfair dumping practices, and incentives for sustainable production. He urged the industry to strengthen global alliances, secure raw material assets overseas, and play a critical role in India’s mission for self-reliance and energy transition.
The industry welcomed the minister’s vision, noting that while India’s current capacity stands at 160 million tonnes, achieving 1 billion tonnes will require long-term strategy, innovation, and global partnerships.
