UK raises above-quota steel tariff to 50% US steel tariffs spark industry backlash NZ clears major green steel project
New Zealand has cleared National Green Steel’s Waikato project under its fast-track approvals program, paving the way for a major recycled steel investment in Hampton Downs. The planned facility will process 200,000 metric tons of scrap steel per year into structural steel and will include a scrap shredding plant, an electric arc furnace, and a solar farm to support cleaner production. The project is expected to strengthen domestic steel supply chains, improve the availability of construction materials, and help address the country’s infrastructure needs. It is also projected to create around 200 skilled jobs, giving the Waikato region both an industrial and employment boost.
