Jindal Steel & Power has significantly strengthened its manufacturing base by tripling its heat-treated plate capacity, becoming India’s largest player in this specialised segment. The company has expanded annual heat-treated plate capacity to 700,000 tonnes, supported by a monthly heat-treating capacity of around 60,000 tonnes, up from nearly 20,000 tonnes earlier.
The upgraded facilities can process high-end furnace normalised (FN) and quenched & tempered (Q&T) plates ranging from 6 mm to 200 mm in thickness and up to 5 metres in width. This allows Jindal Steel to supply a broader portfolio of high-strength and abrasion-resistant plates, as well as defence-grade steels with ballistic properties, tool and die steels, and other critical alloy grades.
According to the company, the expansion will help replace a portion of specialised plate imports and directly support the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat push by enabling domestic production of advanced steels previously sourced from overseas. The enhanced capacity is aimed at key user industries including infrastructure, engineering, energy and heavy machinery, while also positioning Jindal Steel to tap export opportunities in high-value markets. Management emphasised that the move reinforces India’s capability to deliver world-class steel plates that meet stringent global standards.
