India’s steel exports, including stainless steel, climbed 11.7% year-on-year in April 2025 to 725,540 metric tons, driven by a sharp rise in shipments to the European Union, according to BigMint data .
Compared to March 2025, exports dipped 2.7%, but EU-bound shipments surged to a 13-month high of over 358,000 metric tons, up 33% month-on-month, as Indian producers redirected supply from the Middle East amid subdued demand there.
Flat steel products led the export mix at 556,500 metric tons (+1% m/m), while semi-finished steel rose 30% to 78,640 tons. Long products, however, declined 32% to 90,400 tons. Hot-rolled coil exports (excluding stainless steel) fell 12% from March to 130,600 tons.
The export uptick coincided with the EU’s quarterly import quota reset, allowing Indian mills to capitalize on renewed access. Meanwhile, exports to the U.S. and Saudi Arabia declined, partly due to ongoing U.S. steel tariffs
India’s steel import safeguards—a 12% temporary duty introduced in April—aim to curb low-cost imports, especially from China, and support domestic producers .
