The Indian Railways maintained its record-breaking goods loading in May 2024, surpassing the anticipated slowdown during an election month.

According to an official announcement, in May 2024, the national transporter transported 139.16 million tonnes (MT) of goods. This is 3.6% more than the 134.16 MT loading that was attained in May 2023 and 9% more than that of April. According to an official release, freight revenue for May 2024 totalled ₹15,230.90 crore, which represents an increase from ₹14,641.83 crore in the same month of fiscal 2023–2024.

This marks the 56th consecutive month of the national transporter's biggest-ever goods loading, dating back to October 2020. In April and May of fiscal 2024–25, the total goods loading was 267.47 MT. Coal, at 72.01 MT, continued to be the most carried commodity on the national transporter, followed by iron ore, at 14.61 MT.

For the full fiscal year ending March 2024, Indian Railways loaded 1591 MT freight, up from 1512 MT in the preceding fiscal year. Records of railway electrification, new lines, and track replacement were also made during the fiscal year 2023-24. Within goods loading, the Railways ferried 787.61 MT of Coal, 180.95 MT of Iron ore, 153.80 MT of Cement, and 114.36 MT as Balance Other Goods for the full fiscal 2023-24.

Officials said this achievement follows Indian Railways' ‘Hungry For Cargo’ initiative to improve service delivery at competitive prices.
