New guidelines for using steel slag in road construction have been announced by Dr V.K. Saraswat, Member (Science) of Niti Aayog, marking a significant step towards sustainable infrastructure development. The disclosure was made at the First International Conference on Steel Slag Road in New Delhi, co-organized by CSIR-CRRI and PHDCCI.
The rules support the processed use of steel slag aggregates in road construction to promote environmental sustainability. This is achieved by utilising steel companies' waste. Dr Saraswat states that implementing these rules will have significant advantages, such as lower costs, less environmental impact, and improved road performance.
Highlighting the critical role of this initiative, Dr Saraswat said, "Adopting these guidelines for construction and maintenance of road network using steel slag is expected to bring numerous benefits, including cost saving, reduced environmental impact, and improved road performance." He linked the initiative to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s "Waste to Wealth" vision, noting significant contributions by Dr Manoranjan Parida, Director of CRRI, and Shri Satish Pandey, Principal Scientist.
The Ministry of Steel, Government of India, Secretary, Shri Nagendra Nath Sinha, highlighted the research and development work that went into creating these standards. He stated, "The Ministry of Steel sponsored a major R&D project to CSIR-Central Road Research Institute to facilitate large-scale utilisation of steel slag as a substitute for natural aggregates in road construction."
The guidelines also provide a framework for the safe management and storage of steel slag to avoid environmental pollution, indicating a complete commitment to sustainable construction practices.
The Steel Slag Road between Mumbai and Goa, a landmark project demonstrating the effectiveness and promise of this technology, was mentioned by Dr N. Kalaiselvi, Secretary, DSIR and DG, CSIR, who also backed the proposal.
Industry executives also attended the meeting, where they highlighted the many applications and environmental benefits of employing steel slag in road construction. Mr Ranjan Dhar of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India emphasised the success of India's First Steel Slag Road in Hazira, Surat, which used 100,000 tonnes of processed steel slag and won praise for its creative approach both nationally and internationally.
