India leads with 40% of global steel capacity in development.
57% of new coal-based steel projects are planned in India.
Raises sustainability and emission concerns amid expansion.
India has emerged as a dominant player in the global steel industry’s future capacity pipeline, contributing nearly 40% of the world’s steel production capacity currently under development, according to a recent international report. This underscores India’s growing influence in the steel sector amid the country’s infrastructure and manufacturing boom.
The report highlights that of the total new steelmaking capacity planned worldwide, India alone accounts for 57% of the coal-based projects, raising concerns over the environmental footprint of these expansions. While the Indian steel industry continues to modernize with electric arc furnaces and renewable-integrated processes, coal-based plants remain significant due to cost and availability.
Industry experts suggest this capacity addition aligns with India’s target of reaching 300 million tonnes (MT) of steel production by 2030 under its National Steel Policy. However, the reliance on coal-based projects could challenge India’s decarbonization ambitions.
Global analysts have noted that while other nations scale down coal-based steelmaking, India’s investment in this space highlights a complex balance between economic growth and environmental responsibility.
