Government-run coal India Limited (CIL) announced plans to construct and operate nine new coal wash projects across the country with an aggregate capacity of 30 million MT every year in order to decrease the dependency on imported coal and ensure higher supplies to the steel sector, according to government sources on Tuesday, June 25.

India now has a total capacity of around 23 million MT for washing raw coking coal, of which 9.25 million MT are managed by private companies.

The sources mentioned, "We expect to increase supplies of washed coal exclusively to the steel sector by 15 million MT per year with the setting up of new washeries."
