India has indicated that it may reconsider certain tariff concessions granted to the United Kingdom if British authorities continue imposing restrictive measures on steel imports. The development adds fresh uncertainty to the implementation of the recently concluded India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
According to trade officials, India is concerned that UK steel safeguard measures could limit access for Indian steel products despite broader efforts to strengthen bilateral trade relations. New restrictions, including tighter import quotas and higher duties on excess shipments, have become a key point of contention between the two countries. The issue is particularly significant because India agreed to major tariff reductions on several British exports under the trade agreement, including Scotch whisky and other premium products. Indian policymakers have suggested that such concessions may be reviewed if market access concerns for Indian steel exporters remain unresolved.
Industry experts note that steel trade has become an increasingly sensitive topic globally as countries seek to protect domestic producers from excess supply and rising international competition. The dispute also comes amid growing focus on carbon-related trade policies and evolving import regulations across major economies.Analysts believe continued negotiations between India and the UK will be crucial in determining the future of bilateral trade cooperation. A mutually acceptable solution could help preserve the benefits of the trade pact while ensuring fair access for steel producers in both markets.
