Bus services might be affected from January 9 ahead of Pongal as yet another round of talks between Tamil Nadu transport workers’ unions and government on Friday ended inconclusive. Talking to reporters after the meeting, transport minister S S Sivasankar said, that since people might be affected, the unions were requested to withdraw the strike announcement.
“Not all demands can be met at the same time. We will discuss the issue with the state finance department and meet the unions again on Sunday,” he said. The unions including DMK-affiliated Labour Progressive Front (LPF) and left party unions such as CITU and AITUC are, however, firm on going ahead with strike-related campaigns and boycotting work from January 9 if the government did not agree to their demands. Representatives, who attended the meeting, said that the government can’t cite financial reasons yet again and should release a realistic timeline for their demands.
Dearness allowances of employees are pending for three to four months and DA of close to 90,000 pensioners is yet to be released for years, said CITU leader A Soundararajan. “Most of these pensioners, who were denied 4,000 to 7,000 a month, do not have health insurance and have been suffering for years. The government can release the arrears later in instalments. But it should definitely release the pending allowance amount immediately before Pongal.”
