Germany-based Miebach GmbH has secured a contract to supply a state-of-the-art laser welding machine to Tata Steel UK, marking a key step in enhancing the steelmaker’s advanced automotive steel production capabilities.
The new system will be installed at Tata Steel’s Port Talbot works in Wales, where it will be used for the production of tailor-welded blanks — sheets of steel of varying thicknesses joined precisely by laser welding to reduce vehicle weight and improve safety performance.
The equipment will be integrated into Tata Steel’s Automotive Engineering line, supporting its commitment to lightweighting solutions and low-emission mobility components for global carmakers.
The collaboration underscores Tata Steel UK’s focus on modernising its processing facilities and adopting cutting-edge European technologies to improve efficiency, precision, and product value addition.
Miebach, known for its advanced automation and welding technologies, said the project strengthens its long-standing relationship with Tata Steel and supports the industry’s shift toward high-strength, energy-efficient steel production.
