Gustavo Werneck, CEO of Brazil’s steel giant Gerdau, has raised concerns about the growing import levels that threaten the stability of the Brazilian steel industry. He warned that imports could reach 6 million tons by 2025, representing nearly 30% of the domestic market, putting local steelmakers at a competitive disadvantage. Several companies are already operating at a loss, and without protective measures, they may struggle to maintain operations. To restore a fair competitive environment, Gerdau advocates for a reduction in import penetration through anti-dumping measures, aiming to bring it down to 10%. Despite these challenges, Gerdau remains optimistic about 2026, with hopes that increased government awareness and growth in key sectors like automotive and construction will help drive demand. In response to the situation, Gerdau has reopened a steel billet production plant in Ceará, aiming to reduce dependency on imports and bolster local production.
