Union Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has called for the urgent adoption of clean technologies in India’s steel sector, labeling it essential for both environmental and economic sustainability. Speaking at the Future Steel Conclave on June 19, he emphasized that green steel production must become the industry standard.

India aims to reach 300 million tonnes of steel production capacity by 2030 while aligning with its national target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. To support this shift, the government is developing a green steel taxonomy that sets clear carbon benchmarks and rewards low-emission practices.

Currently, steel production contributes about 7% of global CO₂ emissions, and India, as the second-largest producer, holds a major role in leading change. The new framework will cap emissions at 2.2 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of finished steel and introduce a star rating system for products based on carbon intensity.

Kumaraswamy acknowledged challenges, including raw material supply and global market shifts, but reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to creating a supportive policy environment. He also highlighted the importance of R&D and innovation in making the steel sector globally competitive and environmentally responsible.

The push for clean steel aligns with India’s broader sustainability goals and positions the nation to become a leader in green industrial practices.
