China’s steel industry recorded a sharp drop in emissions in February 2026, signaling further progress in cleaner and more efficient production. According to CISA data cited by GMK Center, total exhaust gas emissions from member steel mills fell 12.15% year over year, while sulfur dioxide dropped 16.85%, particulate matter declined 11.29%, and nitrogen oxides decreased 16.33%. Energy consumption across the sector also fell 2.91%, even as steelmakers increased in-house power generation and expanded clean energy output, including strong gains in wind and solar power. The figures reflect China’s broader push to improve environmental performance, lower industrial pollution, and strengthen sustainability across its steel sector.
