Central Coalfields (CCL), a subsidiary of Coal India, is considering a joint venture (JV) with the Jharkhand government for the second-phase expansion of the Tenughat thermal power station (TTPS). The Lalpania-based plant, currently housing two units of 210 megawatts (MW) each, aims to extend its capacity to 1,740 MW by adding two supercritical units of 660 MW each. The collaborative effort involves utilising CCL's coal resources and the state government's land.
TTPS, operated by Tenughat Vidyut Nigam (TVNL), a Jharkhand government undertaking, plans to expand on approximately 1,800 acres of land. The proposed supercritical units are expected to enhance the total installed capacity to 1,740 MW. Initial discussions between CCL and the Jharkhand government have led to the formation of committees to address modalities, including the JV partnership.
Under the envisioned collaboration, the state government is poised to provide land, while CCL will contribute coal for the supercritical units from its nearby mines. TVNL currently contributes around 350 MW to the state grid, meeting the daily coal requirement for full-load generation through road and rail transport.
This development follows the recent Union Cabinet approval for substantial equity investments in pithead thermal power plants by Coal India subsidiaries. The move aligns with the broader strategy of mining PSUs diversifying revenue streams, including ventures into solar and wind power, to meet India's growing power demand and the ambitious target of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity. The government's emphasis on establishing pit-head thermal power plants, due to their cost-effectiveness, forms part of the overall plan to add 6,640 MW of coal-based capacity by FY29. The collaborative expansion of TTPS exemplifies the concerted efforts toward sustainable and diversified energy solutions in the country.
