According to Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, captive and commercial coal blocks produced 147 million tonnes (MT) of coal in the fiscal year 2023–2024, representing a 27% increase year over year.
In 2022–2023, the mines produced 116 MT of coal.
Out of 147.2 MT, power sector captive mines produced 121.3 MT, non-power sector mines produced 8.4 MT, and commercial mines produced 17.5 MT.
In FY24, the output from captive mines serving the electricity sector increased by 19% over the previous year. The production rise in captive mines without electricity was 63% year-on-year. In FY24, output from commercial coal mines increased the highest, by 93%.
Dispatch from the mines during FY24 was 143 MT, up from 110 MT in FY23. A total of 9 new coal mines, including 4 captive mines and 5 commercial mines, commenced production during FY24.
"The Ministry extends its appreciation to all stakeholders for their dedication and efforts in achieving these milestones. The increased coal production not only reinforces India's energy security but also fosters economic growth and industrial development across sectors," Joshi said.
