Bokaro Steel Delivers High-Grade Steel for Indian Navy Ships

Bokaro Steel Plant, a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has supplied advanced DMR 249A grade steel for two new Indian Navy ships—INS Ajay and INS Nistar. The vessels were recently commissioned at Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Visakhapatnam.

INS Ajay is designed for anti-submarine warfare, while INS Nistar will serve as a deep-submergence rescue vessel. Both ships are integral to strengthening India’s naval defense capabilities.

The special-grade steel, known for its high strength and corrosion resistance, was developed indigenously. Its successful deployment underscores India’s growing expertise in producing critical materials for the defence sector.

This achievement also supports the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative by reducing dependence on imported steel and advancing domestic defence manufacturing.

With Bokaro’s continued contribution to strategic projects, India moves closer to becoming self-reliant in the production of specialized defence materials.
