BMW Industries has announced a ₹803 crore investment to set up a new cold rolling steel complex in Bokaro, Jharkhand. The project, aligned with the government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Specialty Steel, aims to boost the company’s total production capacity to 2.5 million tonnes.
The upcoming facility will produce advanced coated steel products, including colour-coated and alloy/non-alloy variants, serving key sectors like infrastructure, automotive, renewable energy, and defense. Colour-coated steel production is expected to begin by Q3 FY26, with commercial output from advanced products slated for early FY27.
Funding for the plant includes ₹500 crore in debt and the remaining through internal accruals. This brownfield expansion is projected to create significant employment and promote regional development.
The initiative supports the Make in India vision by reducing dependency on steel imports. A recent 12% safeguard duty on certain imported steel products also strengthens domestic manufacturers, improving capacity utilization rates currently hovering around 70%.
BMW Industries’ strategic investment marks a major step in strengthening India's high-end steel capabilities and industrial infrastructure.
