Global crude steel production declined 4.2% year-on-year in March 2026, reaching 159.9 million tonnes, according to industry data. For the January–March quarter, world crude steel output stood at 459.2 million tonnes, down 2.3% from the same period last year.
Asia remained the largest steel-producing region, but output fell 3.9% to 119.3 million tonnes. China, the world’s top steel producer, recorded a 6.3% decline to 87 million tonnes, while Japan also slipped 4.1% to 6.9 million tonnes. India, however, continued its strong growth momentum, producing 15.3 million tonnes, up 9.4% year-on-year.
The EU-27 produced 11.4 million tonnes, down 4.6%, while Turkey and Germany posted growth. North America also showed improvement, with production rising 3.5% to 9.5 million tonnes. The Middle East saw the steepest decline, with output falling 33.5%.The latest figures highlight uneven global steel market trends, with India emerging as a key growth driver amid weaker production in China and other major regions.
