Ukraine’s imports of flat rolled steel grew by 17.2% year-on-year in January-May 2025, reaching 454.68 thousand tons, according to the State Customs Service and GMK Center data. Coated flat rolled steel products, which represent 40% of these imports, increased by 10.2% compared to the previous year. Key suppliers included Turkey, Poland, and Slovakia.
Hot-rolled flat products accounted for 36.5% of the total imports, with an 18.9% increase from 2024. Turkey remained the primary supplier of hot-rolled products. Meanwhile, cold-rolled flat products saw a significant rise of 63.8%, driven by increased imports from Turkey, China, and Slovakia.
In May 2025, Ukraine imported 99.11 thousand tons of flat rolled steel, marking a 2.5% increase year-on-year and a 13.5% increase from April. Among these imports, coated products saw a decrease in year-on-year figures but increased by 23.6% from the previous month. The import of hot-rolled products declined both year-on-year and month-on-month, while cold-rolled products surged by 59.8% year-on-year.
Expenditures on flat rolled steel imports grew by 12.1% to $478.89 million for January-May 2025. Imports for May reached $108.14 million, reflecting a 3.5% increase year-on-year and 9% month-on-month.
In 2024, flat rolled steel imports reached 983.49 thousand tons, an 8.3% increase from 2023, with coated products making up half of the total imports. The total cost of flat steel imports for 2024 rose by 5%, reaching $1.08 billion.
