Tata Steel has been served a show-cause notice by the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) authorities, alleging irregularities in input tax credit (ITC) amounting to ₹890.52 crore for the financial years 2018–19 to 2020–21.
Issued on June 13 by the CGST & Central Excise office in Jamshedpur, the notice directs the company to explain why the disputed ITC, along with applicable interest and penalties, should not be recovered. Tata Steel has 30 days to respond and present its case before the tax authorities.
In a regulatory filing, the company strongly refuted the claims, stating the notice "has no merit" and affirming its plan to defend its position in accordance with the law. It further clarified that the notice has no immediate financial or operational impact.
The development comes as tax authorities continue to tighten scrutiny on corporate filings and ITC claims. Tata Steel emphasized its commitment to full compliance and transparency throughout the process.
The matter is now set for adjudication, with the company expected to respond within the stipulated deadline.
