Steel Authority of India Powers Iconic J&K Rail Bridges
The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has emerged as the principal steel supplier for two of India’s most ambitious railway infrastructure projects in Jammu & Kashmir: the Chenab Bridge and the Anji Khad Bridge.
SAIL supplied approximately 70% of the steel used in the world’s highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River, and 100% of the steel required for the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge.
These engineering marvels are part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project and are strategically vital to improving connectivity in the northern region. The steel used includes specialized grades for extreme climatic resilience, high tensile strength, and durability in challenging terrain.
This achievement highlights SAIL’s role in nation-building through high-quality domestic steel production tailored for complex mega-projects.
