SAIL’s Durgapur Steel Plant has awarded SMS group a modernisation contract to upgrade its existing six-metre billet casters, marking a major step toward higher casting efficiency and stronger downstream output. The revamp is expected to lift annual production capacity by more than 60% and add a new 150 mm x 150 mm billet section for the bar mill.

A key highlight of the project is its cost-conscious design. The upgrade will use the plant’s existing civil foundations, helping keep capital expenditure under control while speeding up execution. For steel buyers and market watchers, that makes this more than a routine plant upgrade—it signals a practical capacity expansion with faster rollout and limited extra infrastructure.

The project will be completed in two phases. Billet caster No. 1 is scheduled to go onstream in the fourth quarter of 2027, followed by billet caster No. 2 in the third quarter of 2028. The casters being modernised were originally supplied by SMS in the early 1990s, adding another chapter to the long-standing partnership between the two companies.
