Kalyani Ispat has commissioned SMS group to supply a next-generation high-speed bar and wire rod mill for its Rajnandgaon facility in Chhattisgarh, positioning the plant for cleaner, faster, and more efficient long-product manufacturing. The project targets a lower carbon footprint by removing traditional reheating furnaces and using energy-efficient induction heating to process billets directly from existing casters.
Designed for 500,000 tonnes per year, the mill will produce rebar from 8–40 mm at speeds up to 45 m/s, along with wire rod from 5.5–20 mm at speeds up to 100 m/s—supporting rising demand from construction and infrastructure markets.
The scope includes a ten-pass finishing block, crop and dividing shear, and a high-speed delivery system to boost yield, productivity, and product consistency. Process upgrades such as new water boxes for bar quenching aim to improve mechanical properties while reducing dependence on costly alloying. The wire rod line also integrates loop cooling and automated coil handling, backed by advanced drives and automation for end-to-end sequential mill control
