ROGESA Roheisen- und Rohstoffgesellschaft Saar mbH has received €2.8 million in funding to develop an advanced scrap processing pilot facility in Germany, strengthening Europe’s move toward low-carbon steel production.
The new facility, expected to start operations in the second half of 2028, will process shredded steel and iron scrap using AI-based object recognition and X-ray analysis technology. The project aims to reduce copper and other impurities in scrap, improving material quality for green steelmaking.According to the project plan, the facility could save around 16 gigawatt-hours of energy annually and cut carbon emissions by up to 76,000 tonnes per year. It may also reduce the need for direct reduced iron and primary raw materials by nearly 63,000 tonnes, supporting more efficient electric arc furnace operations.
For the steel industry, the project highlights how smarter scrap processing can play a key role in sustainable steel production and circular raw material use.
