Proterial India, backed by Japan-based Proterial, is setting up India’s first amorphous electrical steel manufacturing plant at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh with an investment of ₹1,350 crore. The project will produce amorphous metal electrical steel, widely known as Metglas—an advanced material used in distribution transformers to improve energy efficiency.
Amorphous electrical steel is valued for its low core-loss performance. Compared with conventional electrical steel, it can reduce transformer core losses by around 20–30%, helping utilities curb wastage and support energy conservation goals. With power demand rising and grid upgrades accelerating, the move is expected to boost domestic availability of high-performance transformer materials and strengthen India’s transformer supply chain.
The new plant also signals growing interest in next-generation electrical steel solutions for modernizing the distribution network, improving transformer performance, and supporting long-term efficiency targets across the power sector.
