India awarded a massive 13,124 MW in new renewable energy bids in May 2024 as part of a significant attempt to increase its renewable energy capacity, according to a report by JMK Research & Analytics. This sizable volume demonstrates the country's dedication to increasing its green energy footprint to meet its sustainable development targets.
Leading the initiative, Rajasthan Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RUVNL) issued an 8,000 MW solar contract, making it one of the largest single tenders in the country's solar energy development history. This ambitious plan is expected to boost solar power generation in Rajasthan, cementing the state's status as a significant participant in India's renewable energy sector.
Furthermore, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) each unveiled tenders for 1,200 MW. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to integrate various renewable sources through hybrid projects, enhancing the reliability and efficiency of India’s power grid.
The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) also significantly contributed to this month’s total, launching tenders for 1,200 MW for solar energy projects and an additional 500 MW dedicated to wind energy across multiple states. Additionally, SJVN Ltd issued a tender for 376.60 MWp, aimed at the domestic manufacturing and supply of modules for the Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd. (GUVNL) Phase XIV solar power project in Gujarat.
"The strategic focus on large-scale projects across various states demonstrates a comprehensive plan to harness the potential of renewable resources, providing a stable and cleaner energy supply while fostering economic growth and environmental sustainability," added an expert.
