Gadchiroli pitched as Maharashtra’s future green steel hub India set to drive next global steel demand wave Italy crude steel output rises 3.1% in May Green steel progress remains slow worldwide
Maharashtra has approved the diversion of 937.077 hectares of reserved and protected forest land in Gadchiroli for Lloyds Metals and Energy Limited’s steel plant expansion. The land will support excavation and recovery of low-grade iron ore from areas near Hedri, Bande and Parsalgondi in Etapalli, strengthening raw material availability for future steel production.
Lloyds Metals already operates on around 700 hectares in Gadchiroli, and the additional land is expected to accelerate its expansion plans. The move comes as the state continues to position the Naxal-affected district as a potential green steel hub of India, creating new opportunities for mining, iron ore processing and steel manufacturing.
The approval is significant for Maharashtra’s steel sector, as Gadchiroli holds strong potential for mineral-based industrial development. However, the final handover will depend on required forest and wildlife-related compliance, as mentioned in the government order. For the steel industry, this marks another major step toward boosting domestic production capacity and strengthening India’s integrated steel ecosystem.
