Lloyds Metal and Energy Limited (LMEL) has successfully commissioned a new 360,000 metric tons per year sponge iron plant in Ghugus, Maharashtra, marking another significant milestone in India's steel sector expansion. The facility began operations on September 1, with the first two kilns fired up and production ramping in phases.
This commissioning represents LMEL's third major facility launch within the current fiscal year, following the recent inauguration of an 85-kilometer slurry pipeline and a 4 million metric ton pellet plant. The turnkey project, executed by Lloyds Engineering Works Limited, demonstrates the company's commitment to vertical integration.
With the Ghugus plant operational, LMEL's total sponge iron capacity now reaches 700,000 metric tons annually. The facility is strategically positioned to maximize captive utilization of the company's mined iron ore reserves, strengthening its integrated steel-making value chain.
The Maharashtra location provides LMEL with enhanced logistics advantages and proximity to key markets. This expansion aligns with India's growing steel demand and the government's infrastructure development initiatives, positioning LMEL as a significant player in the domestic sponge iron market while supporting the nation's steel production capabilities.
