The School of Infrastructure at IIT Bhubaneswar, in partnership with the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), hosted an international workshop on fire safety in steel and composite structures on Wednesday.

The daylong event, organised under the Ministry of Education’s Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC), focused on structural instability analysis of thin-walled steel structures exposed to fire-induced thermo-mechanical loading. The workshop brought together global experts, disaster management officials, industry leaders, and students to exchange insights on the latest challenges and solutions in fire-safe design.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Venkatesh Kodur of Michigan State University, USA—part of the expert team that investigated the World Trade Centre collapse during 9/11—highlighted advanced design methods and innovations in composite construction to improve fire resistance.

Dr. Kamal Lochan Mishra, Executive Director of OSDMA, underlined the importance of integrating academic research with disaster management practices, stressing that technical expertise is crucial for enhancing community safety and resilience.

The workshop emphasized the role of collaborative research and knowledge-sharing in developing safer, more resilient infrastructure against fire-related risks.
