Jindal Steel and Power Rebrands as Jindal Steel India–US Trade Tensions Rise Over Steel and Auto Tariffs NMDC Limited reports a 38% drop in Q4 FY24 consolidated net profit RINL to Raise $23 Million Through Land Sales Amid Crisis
India’s finished steel imports dropped sharply by 28.8% year-on-year during April to June 2025, totaling 1.4 million metric tonnes. The steep decline is primarily attributed to India’s 12% safeguard tariff imposed earlier this year on certain flat steel products to curb rising imports.
Shipments from major exporters like China and Japan fell significantly, with Chinese imports plunging 45.8% and Japanese shipments down 65.2% over the same period. This trade shift reflects the early impact of protectionist measures designed to strengthen domestic industry.
At the same time, India’s crude steel output rose 11.2% year-on-year to reach 40.6 million tonnes, while finished steel consumption grew 7.9% to 38.3 million tonnes, signaling robust demand driven by infrastructure and manufacturing sectors.
The Ministry of Steel emphasized that these trends demonstrate improving self-sufficiency in the sector, aligning with broader government goals to reduce import dependency and promote domestic production under the National Steel Policy.
Analysts expect import volumes to remain subdued in the coming quarters, especially if global prices soften and India’s domestic capacity continues to ramp up.
