India has turned into a net exporter of finished steel in FY2025-26, marking a strong shift for the domestic steel industry. Provisional government data showed that India exported 6.6 million metric tonnes of finished steel during the financial year ended March 31, up 35.9% from the previous year.
At the same time, finished steel imports dropped 31.7% to 6.5 million tonnes, helping India regain export strength amid rising production and steady demand. Major buyers of Indian finished steel included Italy, Vietnam, Belgium, the UAE and Spain.
India, the world’s second-largest crude steel producer, also recorded 169.2 million tonnes of crude steel production, an 11.2% year-on-year increase. Finished steel consumption rose 8% to 164.2 million tonnes, reflecting continued demand from infrastructure, construction, manufacturing and industrial sectors.The data signals improving competitiveness for Indian steelmakers and highlights India’s growing role in the global finished steel trade.
