India is preparing a major push to expand steel production while lowering the sector’s carbon footprint. A draft policy reviewed by Reuters shows the country aims to cut steel emissions by around 25% by 2035-36, bringing them down to 2 metric tons of carbon dioxide per ton of finished steel from about 2.65 tons now. At the same time, India plans to raise crude steel capacity to 400 million tons by 2035-36 from about 168 million tons, strengthening its position in the global steel industry. The policy also focuses on reducing dependence on imported coking coal, increasing scrap usage, encouraging gas-based steelmaking, and improving access to gas pipeline infrastructure. With stronger infrastructure spending and industrial growth, the roadmap is expected to support exports, attract heavy investment, and create millions of jobs. The move signals India’s effort to balance steel demand growth with cleaner production and long-term sustainability goals.
